The Marine Literacy Project, conducted by Ekomiras Akdeniz, was successfully held in Bodrum on September 25-26, hosted by TED Bodrum College.
The project aimed to instill marine awareness in children and young people at an early age, create scientific understanding, and help them establish a sustainable relationship with the sea.
Science-Backed Education Program
As part of the project, presentations, short lectures, documentary screenings, and interactive workshops were organized for students aged 10-17 by expert marine biologists and scientists. The educational content was prepared based on scientific accuracy but in a language that children and young people could easily understand.
To the students;
The importance of seagrasses for the Mediterranean ecosystem,
Invasive species and their impacts on the ecosystem,
Sharks, rays, and endangered marine life,
Environmental problems on our coasts,
The function and importance of marine protected areas.
Comprehensive and practical information was provided on topics such as these.
Visual and Experiential Learning
The training sessions, planned in morning and afternoon formats, adopted visual and experiential learning methods to increase student interest and participation. In this context, the documentary "Project Posidonia – Seagrasses" was screened to discuss the role of seagrasses within the ecosystem with concrete examples.
Through workshops and interactive presentations, students were encouraged not only to acquire knowledge but also to ask questions, think, and discuss. Thus, the sea ceased to be an abstract concept and transformed into a meaningful living space in the students' minds.
For Generations Who Can Read the Sea
All activities aimed to foster environmental awareness in children and young people at an early age, to establish an emotional and intellectual connection with the sea, and in the long term, to raise individuals who can understand the sea and bear the responsibility of protecting it.
Reading Blue, through this project, has transformed the relationship with the sea into a lasting learning process by bringing together knowledge, experience, and awareness. For EcoHeritage Mediterranean, this approach is not just a project title; it is an expression of a sustainable journey to understand, explain, and protect the sea.
